Paris St-Germain defeated Brazilian champions Flamengo on penalties to win the Intercontinental Cup final in Qatar. Goalkeeper Matvey Safonov saved four spot-kicks and secured PSG’s sixth trophy of the year. The Champions League holders matched last year’s achievement by Real Madrid, who lifted the inaugural edition. The tournament brings together six continental champions, while the European champions advance directly to the final.
Kvaratskhelia strikes before Flamengo respond
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave PSG the lead seven minutes before half-time at the Ali Stadium. The Georgian forward finished calmly at the back post after meeting Desire Doue’s low cross. Flamengo responded after the break through Jorginho, who converted a penalty in the 62nd minute. Giorgian de Arrascaeta won the spot-kick after drawing a foul from Marquinhos inside the area.
Extra time fails to separate the finalists
Both sides pushed for a winner during normal time and extra time without success. PSG controlled long spells but could not break down goalkeeper Agustin Rossi again. Luis Enrique introduced Ousmane Dembele for the final 12 minutes to increase attacking pressure. The French champions finished stronger but failed to convert their chances.
Safonov delivers in decisive shootout
Safonov dominated the penalty shootout with four crucial saves. Vitinha and Nuno Mendes converted their attempts to secure a 2-1 shootout victory. The Russian goalkeeper’s performance decided the final and sealed the trophy for PSG. Flamengo missed several efforts under intense pressure.
Strong squad selection despite key absence
PSG rested several players during their recent league win at Metz. Luis Enrique still selected a strong lineup for the final. Dembele started on the bench despite recently winning the FIFA Best award. The decision allowed PSG to maintain intensity across the match.
Another trophy crowns historic year for PSG
The Intercontinental Cup became PSG’s sixth title of 2025. The club already secured Ligue 1, the Coupe de France, and the Champions League last season. PSG also lifted the Trophee des Champions and the Uefa Super Cup earlier this year. Dembele won the FIFA Best men’s player award on Tuesday, while Luis Enrique claimed best coach. Six players from PSG appeared in the team of the year during 2025.
PSG return to action on Saturday against Vendee Fontenay Foot in the Coupe de France.
