Marseille turn the night around
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang revived old memories as he scored a rapid double and shocked Newcastle in the Champions League. Marseille delighted their crowd as they came from behind thanks to two goals from the 36-year-old former Arsenal and Chelsea striker. Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle the dream start with a sharp sixth-minute finish inside the box. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg then produced a brilliant goal-line header to deny Malick Thiaw. Newcastle, who have won only once away this season, dropped deeper and allowed Marseille to dictate the game. The hosts created several chances for Aubameyang, who wasted a few before the break.
Aubameyang turns back the clock
The second half had barely started when 17-year-old Darryl Bakola threaded a pass behind the Newcastle defence. Nick Pope rushed out as Aubameyang sprinted through, but the keeper stopped in no man’s land as the striker scored from a tight angle on the right. Marseille doubled their lead four minutes later when Timothy Weah burst past Tino Livramento and crossed for Aubameyang. The striker beat Fabian Schär to hook the ball in at the near post. The goal sent coach Roberto De Zerbi dancing on the touchline. The former Brighton manager punched the air at full-time as Marseille secured their second Champions League win of the season. The French club climbed to 19th in the standings while Newcastle dropped to eighth.
Newcastle’s away troubles deepen
Newcastle continued a worrying pattern. They shine at home but falter away, even after scoring first. They led in their last three away games against Marseille, Brentford and West Ham but lost all three. This defeat stings even more after a strong win against Manchester City at St James’ Park. Newcastle only had themselves to blame.
