Arne Slot guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season with remarkable accuracy. The Dutch manager has stumbled in his second season, struggling to find cohesion in his heavily invested squad. Liverpool has lost six of their past seven matches across competitions, casting doubts over Slot’s strategy.
Squad Choices Under Scrutiny
Slot faced criticism for fielding a team of fringe players and youngsters against Crystal Palace. Liverpool suffered a 3-0 home defeat in the Carabao Cup last 16. Key players including Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo, Florian Wirtz, Mohamed Salah, and Hugo Ekitike were absent. The Reds exited a competition they had won twice in four seasons and reached the final in the previous campaign.
Slot acknowledged the criticism but defended his approach in the post-match press conference. “This club has always used this competition to give academy players experience. It felt like the right decision, and I have not changed my opinion because of the loss,” he said.
Youth Given Chance
Slot included three teenagers in his starting line-up and added five more to the bench, making ten changes from the team beaten 3-2 by Brentford on Saturday. He compared his choice to Manchester City’s approach, noting that even when City rested starters, their line-up played with cohesion.
“People always say our squad is big. But we are missing only four players, and I had to start with four under-19 players. After two substitutions, it became six,” Slot explained.
Liverpool started brightly, but Ismaila Sarr scored twice before halftime. In the second half, 18-year-old Amara Nallo received a red card, ending any hopes of a comeback. Yeremy Pino added a late third, making the scoreline flattering.
Slot insisted player fatigue did not excuse the loss. “Our team struggles to play three games in seven days. Some players have faced challenges in pre-season. Playing in the Premier League and Champions League back-to-back is a new test. Our squad is not as large as people think,” he said.
Former Players Criticize the Approach
Ex-Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock suggested Slot had no justification for resting so many players. “He almost admitted the squad is not strong enough. It felt like deflecting and making excuses. Playing in the Champions League means expecting these schedules,” Warnock said.
Liverpool spent over £400m in the summer transfer window. Former Scotland international Pat Nevin argued the Carabao Cup no longer ranks highly in Slot’s priorities. “Slot has shown it is secondary to upcoming fixtures. Liverpool fans recognize that,” Nevin said. “They invested in high-profile names rather than depth, and it is showing now.”
Pressure Mounts Ahead of Key Fixtures
Liverpool has lost four consecutive Premier League games, starting with five wins, leaving them seventh in the table. A defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday could mark their worst run since 1953. Slot dismissed suggestions that resting first-team players increased pressure. “Pressure is constant at Liverpool. Losing six of seven games does not change it. We need as many players available as possible for a big week ahead,” he said.
Slot stressed that the choice to rest certain players was strategic, considering recent games and injuries. “We only rested players active last week. The League Cup has always been a platform for young academy players,” he added.
Crystal Palace Boss Defends Liverpool
Despite criticism, Palace manager Oliver Glasner rejected claims Liverpool fielded a weak team. “It was Slot’s decision. We respect that. Liverpool still had full internationals like Joe Gomez, Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister, Milos Kerkez, and Calvin Ramsay. They played very well,” Glasner said.
Liverpool’s lineup included 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha and 18-year-old midfielders Trey Nyoni and Kieran Morrison, alongside seven internationals. Slot deployed three central defenders with Robertson, Gomez, and Endo, backed by full-backs Kerkez and Ramsay.
Next Steps for Slot
Slot knows this match will fade from memory if Liverpool achieves positive results against Villa, Real Madrid, and Manchester City. Warnock added: “Winning these games could justify the risk. If not, fans will grow frustrated. Managers make changes for reasons, but victories are the final measure.”
Slot demands immediate improvement. Liverpool’s recent form remains unacceptable, and he expects a response from his squad to relieve mounting pressure.
