Earlier this year, Harry Kane finally ended his long wait for a major trophy. In his 15th professional season, he celebrated the Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich. That success opened the door for new ambitions — not only for his club and country but also for his own legacy.
Despite being in the best form of his life, the England captain ranked only 13th at the 2025 Ballon d’Or ceremony in September. He has never finished higher than 10th in the world’s most prestigious individual award. Yet, since Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembélé was named the world’s best player, Kane seems to have found another gear. His performances now feel beyond what was thought possible.
The 32-year-old raised his tally to 20 goals in just 12 matches this season. Bayern’s 4-0 Champions League win over Club Brugge again underlined his brilliance. Kane knows what must follow: keep scoring, win Europe’s biggest prize, and lead England to World Cup glory next summer. That, he believes, could make him the frontrunner for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
“I would love to win it,” said the former Tottenham striker. “It would mean achieving something great both individually and as a team. It would be almost the perfect season.”
The last Englishman to win the award was Michael Owen in 2001. Before him came Stanley Matthews in 1956, Bobby Charlton in 1966, and Kevin Keegan in 1978 and 1979. Could Kane become the fifth English player to claim football’s most coveted honour — or will Europe’s new stars block his path?
Numbers that tell the story
Kane’s current form suggests this may be his best chance yet. In September, he became the fastest player this century to score 100 goals for a club in Europe’s top five leagues. He needed only 104 games to reach that milestone and now has 105 goals in 108 matches.
No other player in Europe’s elite leagues has scored as many since the start of the 2023–24 season. Even Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo needed more matches to hit 20 goals in a season. Kane reached that mark in record time, averaging a goal every 54 minutes.
He has already scored 12 goals in seven Bundesliga matches and is on track for 58 this season. To break Robert Lewandowski’s record of 41 goals in one Bundesliga campaign, he needs 30 more in 27 games.
In Europe, the numbers are equally staggering. Since his first Champions League appearance for Bayern in September 2023, he has scored 24 times and assisted six goals. No player in the competition has been directly involved in more goals. Only Ruud van Nistelrooy scored more in his first 60 matches in the tournament.
A striker who changed the game
But Kane’s claim to the Ballon d’Or is not only about goals. His intelligence, movement, and vision redefine the modern centre-forward role.
“Kane has reinvented the striker’s game, just as Manuel Neuer changed goalkeeping fifteen years ago,” wrote 1990 Ballon d’Or winner Lothar Matthäus in his Sky Germany column. “There is no better striker right now — not only for his goals but for his versatility and positioning. Kane passes, dribbles, and tackles. He is scorer, creator, and worker in one.”
Kane’s teammates feel the same. “Harry makes everyone better,” said his former Bayern teammate Kingsley Coman on Rio Ferdinand’s podcast. “He’s not just here to finish chances. He loves setting up others as much as scoring himself. He’s one of the easiest strikers to play with. He’s unselfish and still scores 40 goals a season.”
After Jamal Musiala’s injury in the summer, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany gave Kane more attacking freedom. The result has been stunning. “He plays like three or four players at once — that’s how valuable he is,” said football analyst Raphael Honigstein. Journalist Mina Rzouki added: “His football brain and team sacrifice are on another level.”
Haaland and Mbappé chase the crown
Kane is not alone in this race for global dominance. Erling Haaland has scored 24 goals in 14 games for Manchester City and Norway. Kylian Mbappé has 18 in 14 appearances for Real Madrid and France. Kane, including his England goals, stands at 23 in 15 matches.
Haaland has scored in 12 consecutive matches, and Mbappé’s streak reached 11 before ending. Yet Matthäus believes neither matches Kane’s complete influence on the pitch. “I’ve never seen Haaland or Mbappé slide into a tackle in their own box like Kane did against Dortmund,” he wrote. “I haven’t seen them hit 50-metre passes or chip shots like Kane can.”
When Messi and Ronaldo didn’t win the Ballon d’Or, the award usually went to a player from a team that triumphed in the Champions League, Euros, or World Cup. “It’s a team trophy that the best individual from that team wins,” Kane admitted. “But if I keep performing and we succeed with Bayern and England, then there’s a real chance.”
Bayern have three wins from three in the Champions League, and England qualified for the 2026 World Cup with six straight victories. For Kane, this could finally be the perfect season — the one where goals, trophies, and personal glory all align.
