Manchester United consider signing Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez before Monday’s transfer deadline. The club aims to solve persistent goalkeeping issues and strengthen their squad ahead of the Premier League season.
United eyes on young Belgian talent
United have also negotiated with Royal Antwerp for 23-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens. The highly rated youngster wants to join United and has been left out of Antwerp’s past two matches. Antwerp need a significant sale to meet obligations from a previous external loan. However, Lammens lacks high-level experience, making Martinez a safer option for immediate impact.
Martinez offers experience and accolades
Martinez has 197 Premier League appearances, won the World Cup with Argentina, and claimed Fifa goalkeeper of the year twice. His experience gives United a proven presence in goal. After Saturday’s 3-2 win over Burnley, United head coach Ruben Amorim said, “I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment.”
Current keepers under scrutiny
Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana have both made costly errors this season. Bayindir’s mistake against Burnley almost cost the team the victory, which Bruno Fernandes’ injury-time penalty salvaged. United consider strengthening the goalkeeper position before the transfer window closes at 19:00 BST on Monday.
Competing interest for Lammens
Turkish club Galatasaray have shown interest in Lammens. They could also target Bayindir or Onana if United chooses Martinez as their preferred signing. United sources confirm they plan to sign at most one goalkeeper this summer.
Martinez’s potential return
United explored a loan move for 32-year-old Martinez at the start of summer, but Villa rejected the offer. Martinez appeared to bid farewell to Villa supporters at the end of last season but played in last week’s defeat at Brentford. His experience could provide the stability United need between the posts.
