Ruben Amorim admitted the Manchester United goalkeeper position is difficult at the moment. The issue will dominate training this week ahead of the Manchester derby at Etihad Stadium.
United signed 23-year-old Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18m, bypassing Aston Villa’s World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez. The club also seeks a loan exit for Andre Onana to Trabzonspor.
Amorim must choose between Turkey’s number two Altay Bayindir, who has started three Premier League games but made costly errors, or debuting Lammens in a high-pressure environment.
What Went Wrong for Onana
Onana, backed by Edwin van der Sar, arrived at United with high expectations but struggled to adapt. Tactical changes forced him to play long passes instead of his natural short distribution.
Onana’s Old Trafford pre-season error against Lens, where a risky pass led to a 50-yard chip goal, undermined his confidence and reputation.
Former teammate Nemanja Matic criticized him publicly before the Europa League semi-final, calling him “one of the worst goalkeepers in club history.” Onana then made two mistakes in the first leg, further reducing trust in him.
Despite returning from injury, Onana only played in a Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby, while Bayindir retained his league starting spot.
Amorim Moves Forward
Amorim decided he could no longer rely on Onana. The manager now focuses on integrating Bayindir and preparing Lammens for future Premier League action.
