Villarreal midfielder Thomas Partey will play against Tottenham in the Champions League on Tuesday, just a day before his court appearance on rape and sexual assault charges. Villarreal manager Marcelino says Partey is fully prepared for the match.
Partey denies serious allegations
Ghanaian midfielder Partey, 32, faces five counts of rape involving two women and one charge of sexual assault against a third. The alleged offences reportedly occurred between 2021 and 2022 during his time at Arsenal. Partey denies all charges. His lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, stated he welcomes the chance to clear his name.
Villarreal backing their player
Partey received conditional bail and signed with Villarreal two days later. The Spanish side finished fifth in La Liga last season. Marcelino insists Partey is ready both mentally and technically for the match against Tottenham.
“I am totally convinced he is prepared to play tomorrow,” Marcelino said. “We are very happy to have Thomas with us for his football skills, ability, and presence as a person.” He added, “He is a great player with a lot of experience, having played for top clubs. We know he has an outstanding level.”
Focus remains on football
When asked if he discussed potential hostility from Tottenham fans, Marcelino emphasized football over distractions. “We are talking about a player who could be completely innocent,” he said. “Tomorrow, the important thing is the game itself. Football is what matters most here.”
Partey’s career so far
Partey joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020, appearing 167 times and scoring nine goals. He has played four matches for Villarreal this season, starting once.
