Romero Extends Tottenham Stay
Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has signed a new four-year contract, securing his future at the club until 2029. The 27-year-old Argentine centre-back joined Spurs from Atalanta in August 2021, initially on loan before making the move permanent the following summer.
Key Achievements and Leadership Role
Romero has made 126 appearances for Tottenham, scoring eight goals, and captained the team in the Europa League final as Spurs defeated Manchester United, ending a 17-year trophy drought. After speculation linking him to Atletico Madrid this summer, he was named club captain by new head coach Thomas Frank, cementing his role as a leader both on and off the pitch.
Romero’s Ambitions
Romero expressed his happiness at Spurs and optimism for the season ahead. “We want to win. Maybe why not win again this season? Another trophy is important for everyone,” he said. “For me, this club is the best in the world. Becoming captain and signing this contract are fantastic decisions.”
Coach Praises Leadership
Thomas Frank highlighted Romero’s influence in training and matches. “He commands big respect from his teammates and sets the standards on and off the pitch,” Frank said. “I see a player who will lead and push the team forward.”
Following Spence’s Long-Term Commitment
Romero joins right-back Djed Spence in signing a long-term contract extension. Spence, 25, arrived from Middlesbrough in 2022 and, after loan spells at Rennes, Leeds, and Genoa, became a key player last season under former manager Ange Postecoglou. He has made 42 appearances, scoring twice, and his previous deal was set to expire in 2028.
