Steve Clarke warned Scotland supporters against taking on debt to follow the team to the World Cup.
He spoke as supporter club members began applying for tickets for matches in the United States.
Scotland will face Haiti and Morocco in Boston.
The team will play Brazil in Miami in the final group fixture.
Fifa has drawn criticism for ticket prices that could cost supporters thousands.
Scotland fans expect an allocation of about eight percent for group matches.
The Scottish FA hopes that figure will rise in the coming months.
Clarke told BBC Scotland, “It’s going to be expensive.”
He added, “It’s expensive to go to America anyway, and the tickets are expensive.”
Ticket prices set for Boston and Miami matches
Tickets for the Haiti match will cost £134, £298, or £372.
Tickets for the Morocco match will cost £163, £320, or £447.
Scotland will play five-time world champions Brazil in Miami on 24 June.
Organisers allocated 3,736 tickets to Scotland supporters for that match.
Brazil match tickets will cost £198, £373, or £523.
Clarke said he hopes travelling supporters can secure affordable tickets.
He said fans “who travel to far-flung places deserve to be there.”
He joked, “A friend booked flights and wants tickets, but I have none yet.”
Clarke discusses squad planning and player opportunities
Clarke spoke during his first Scotland visit since qualification against Denmark.
Scotland secured qualification with a 4-2 victory last month.
Clarke said, “The excitement around the country has been great to see.”
He added, “It shows the power of football and what it can do.”
Scotland plans friendly matches against non-European opponents.
The team may also play a Hampden send-off match.
Clarke plans two training camps before the tournament.
One camp will take place in a hot climate.
Clarke confirmed the squad will include 26 players.
He said, “That gives me a bit of leeway.”
