Fridolina Rolfo scored her first Manchester United goal to seal a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid in a tense Women’s Champions League encounter. Both teams finished with ten players after two red cards in the heated contest.
The Swedish forward, who joined from Barcelona this summer, volleyed home in the 24th minute, securing United’s second straight win in the group stage.
Manager Marc Skinner praised his players after the match.
“We had to defend for our lives in the second half,” he said. “We showed real character to withstand Atleti’s pressure. I’m incredibly proud.”
United built on last week’s 1-0 victory over Valerenga, maintaining their perfect European start.
Red Cards, Missed Chances, and Relentless Pressure
Ella Toone missed an early chance on her 200th United appearance, but Rolfo broke the deadlock moments later. The two-time Champions League winner timed her run perfectly to smash a volley into the roof of the net.
Melvine Malard nearly doubled the lead after a clever exchange with Julia Zigiotti Olme, but her effort drifted wide.
The match turned before halftime when Dominique Janssen received a straight red card for a sliding challenge on Gio Garbelini. Referee Eleni Antoniou initially gave a yellow before VAR upgraded it after confirming heavy contact on the ankle. Garbelini left the field on a stretcher.
Atletico pressed their advantage immediately. Phallon Tullis-Joyce made a sharp save to deny an equaliser as the hosts launched wave after wave of attacks.
In the 74th minute, Atletico’s Alexia Fernandez earned a second yellow card for fouling Leah Galton, reducing both sides to ten.
United regained control late on. Malard missed another golden chance to seal the result, curling wide after a brilliant solo run.
The victory put United alongside Barcelona, Lyon, Wolfsburg, and Real Madrid on maximum points after two games. Atletico sit on three points from two matches.
Skinner Applauds Defensive Brilliance as United Hold Firm
United once again showcased one of Europe’s toughest defences, conceding only four goals in eleven games across all competitions this season.
“Atleti are an excellent side,” Skinner said. “To stop them, we had to be exceptional defensively. We’re one of the best at keeping clean sheets.”
United’s back four remained composed before Janssen’s dismissal. With the numerical disadvantage, Atletico piled on pressure, taking 15 second-half shots compared to three in the first.
Goalkeeper Tullis-Joyce made multiple close-range saves, while captain Maya Le Tissier led with ten clearances inside the box. Hinata Miyazawa and Zigiotti Olme also worked tirelessly, ranking just behind Le Tissier in defensive contributions.
When Fernandez’s red card levelled the numbers, United wrestled back control. Their defensive structure and discipline secured another vital European win — a performance defined by resilience, organisation, and Rolfo’s decisive strike.
