Valverde stuns with early free-kick
Federico Valverde scored a spectacular early free-kick as Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid to reach the Spanish Super Cup final. The goal came just 77 seconds into Thursday’s semi-final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, when Los Blancos captain sent a 30-yard shot past Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak into the top corner.
Rodrygo doubles the lead
Rodrygo extended Real’s advantage in the 55th minute with a clever finish past Oblak. His highlight was a brilliant first touch controlling a Valverde pass, followed by a quick acceleration past defender Robin Le Normand. Atletico pulled a goal back through Alexander Sorloth, who rose above Raul Asencio at the back post to head home and reduce the deficit.
Atletico struggles to convert chances
Sorloth’s goal remained Atletico’s only successful shot from 22 attempts. Earlier, he headed wide when Conor Gallagher delivered a perfect ball, and Julian Alvarez missed a late shot in second-half injury time. Xabi Alonso’s team, missing injured Kylian Mbappe, had to fight hard to secure the victory.
Real holds on despite missed chances
Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior, who had not scored in 16 games, both missed chances in the first and second halves. Despite their efforts, Los Blancos held on and earned a place in the final. Their reward is a chance to win the second Clasico of the season after defeating Barcelona 2-1 at the Bernabeu in October.
Flick’s Barcelona awaits in final
Hansi Flick’s Barcelona reached the final after a 5-0 semi-final win against Athletic Club on Wednesday. The Spanish Super Cup takes place in Jeddah, following an extended deal between Saudi Arabia and the Spanish Football Federation to host the tournament in the country until 2029.
