Napoli moved to the top of Serie A after beating title rivals Inter Milan at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Scott McTominay and Kevin de Bruyne scored as the defending champions secured a crucial win.
De Bruyne opens scoring with penalty
Napoli took the lead in the 33rd minute when De Bruyne converted a penalty after Henrikh Mkhitaryan fouled Giovanni di Lorenzo inside the box. Inter started strongly, with captain Lautaro Martinez denied from close range by goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic. De Bruyne’s goal marked his fourth in eight league games since joining Napoli. Soon after scoring, he limped off the pitch, leaving Inter manager Cristian Chivu to make an early substitution.
McTominay and Anguissa seal the win
Napoli extended their lead nine minutes after the restart. McTominay ran onto a long ball from Leonardo Spinazzola and finished from the edge of the box past Yann Sommer. Inter reduced the deficit when Hakan Calhanoglu scored a penalty following a handball by Alessandro Buongiorno. Napoli responded quickly, with Frank Anguissa restoring their two-goal advantage within seven minutes.
Napoli climb to the top
The victory ended a three-game winless streak for Napoli, which included a league defeat by Torino and a 6-2 Champions League loss to PSV Eindhoven. Napoli now lead Serie A with six wins in eight games, overtaking AC Milan by a single point. McTominay had previously scored in Napoli’s 2-0 win over Cagliari to secure their fourth Serie A title in 2024-25, finishing one point ahead of Inter. Roma could match Napoli’s 18 points with a win over Sassuolo on Sunday.
