Manchester United have announced the departure of manager Ruben Amorim, with Darren Fletcher set to take temporary charge for Wednesday’s Premier League clash against Burnley.
Tensions Behind the Scenes
The decision follows a turbulent period at Old Trafford. Amorim had openly hinted at a strained relationship with club officials, expressing frustration over a lack of full backing in the transfer market. After Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds, he made another pointed comment, saying he wanted to operate as a manager “not the coach” and was prepared to leave once his contract expired in 18 months.
Club Cites Lack of Progress
Less than a day later, Manchester United confirmed that Amorim had “departed his role as head coach” after 14 months at the helm. The club cited their current sixth-place position in the Premier League and a desire to give the team the best chance of a strong finish as the reason for the change. Sources told BBC Sport that the club felt there had not been enough evidence of improvement or evolution under Amorim this season.
Shortest Permanent Reign Since 2014
Appointed in November 2024, Amorim won 25 of his 63 games with United. His 14-month tenure now ranks as the shortest reign of a permanent manager at the club since David Moyes, who lasted just eight months in 2014. The Red Devils thanked Amorim for his contributions and wished him well for the future.
