New Leadership for Leicester
Leicester City have turned to former player Gary Rowett as their manager until the end of the season, hoping his experience can steer the club away from the Championship drop zone. Rowett, 51, who was dismissed by Oxford United two months ago, took his first training session with the Foxes on Wednesday and will lead the team against Stoke City this Saturday.
“I’m really proud to be the new Leicester City manager and to have the opportunity to work with and lead a really talented group over the coming months,” Rowett said. “It’s very clear to us all what needs to be achieved between now and the end of the season and the work begins immediately.”
A Familiar Face with Championship Experience
Rowett is no stranger to Leicester, having played for the club from 2000 to 2002 after joining from Birmingham City. He has managed five Championship sides, including Birmingham, Derby County, Stoke City, Millwall, and most recently Oxford. He will be assisted by former Foxes teammate Callum Davidson.
The club has endured a difficult period, losing all four games under interim boss Andy King and suffering a six-point deduction for breaching spending rules. Combined with a seven-game winless streak, Leicester have slipped into the bottom three, trailing the safety line by just two points with 14 games remaining.
Focus on Survival
Foxes chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha emphasized the challenge ahead. “Gary is a manager with deep knowledge of the Championship and experience of the situation we now face in these final 14 games of the season – a fight for survival in the division,” he said. “We will provide Gary with every support to help us find the solutions we need.”
The chairman also praised Andy King for his dedication during the interim period, noting that King and the existing coaching staff will continue to support Rowett and Davidson as they work to secure Leicester’s Championship status.
