Chaos has surrounded Old Trafford since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013. Manchester United have hired 10 managers and finished 15th last season. Bruno Fernandes has provided the one constant source of quality. At 32, he still defines the team’s attacking identity.
He nearly left for Saudi Arabia in the summer. The club accepted the idea of a transfer. Fernandes chose to stay because he loves United. Supporters have benefited from that decision.
Since joining from Sporting in 2020, he has delivered relentless numbers. His goal against Tottenham brought 200 goal contributions in 315 games. He reached that mark faster than Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and David Beckham.
He now targets the Premier League assist record of 20. Fernandes has 12 with 14 matches remaining. He leads the league with 78 chances created. He stands far ahead of every rival and teammate.
Constant change has not slowed him. He has played under six different managers and several tactical systems. He has still produced double figures for goals and assists every season. He has scored 104 times and created 96 more.
Ruben Amorim briefly moved him into a deeper midfield role. That system limited his risk-taking and increased defensive work. It pushed him away from goal and reduced his influence.
Fernandes accepted the position without complaint. The role never suited his strengths. His output under Amorim reflected individual quality rather than tactical support.
Michael Carrick restored him to the No 10 position in January. He gave him freedom to roam and make decisions. The change immediately improved United’s attack.
The contrast against Manchester City showed the difference. Fernandes struggled in a deep role earlier in the season. In Carrick’s system, he operated near the box and created decisive moments.
Since the switch, he has driven almost everything positive. He has produced 27 chances in six league matches. He has added six assists in eight games in all competitions.
United now play with confidence and fluid movement. Fernandes controls the rhythm and supplies the final pass. If this form continues, he could match Henry and De Bruyne’s assist record.
