Pundits clashed over the decision, with many confused about the exact wording of the handball law. Ex-Premier League striker Chris Sutton called it “a scandal” on BBC Radio 5 Live. He argued, “That’s not a penalty. His arm is down by his side.” Former Everton defender Conor Coady said, “I don’t like the rule. I don’t know what counts as handball these days.”

    Experts Defend Referee’s Call

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher supported the referee on Sky Sports. Neville said, “Tarkowski moved his arm toward the ball. He leans into it and blocks it. It is a penalty, and he knows it.” Carragher agreed that Tarkowski clearly understood he committed a mistake.

    Managers React to Controversy

David Moyes criticized the referees, calling it “a really poor decision” on BBC Sport. He said, “Unless you cut the boy’s hand off, I don’t know where he goes. VAR could have undone it.” Leeds manager Daniel Farke expressed cautious support, saying, “I hope the referee was right. The crowd influenced emotions, but long VAR checks cannot overturn a decision unfairly.”
