Rayan Cherki produced a stunning rabona assist during Manchester City’s win over Sunderland and electrified the Etihad crowd. Former defender Steph Houghton praised the moment as the assist of the season, while Pep Guardiola urged Cherki to simplify his play. Cherki dominated the rain-soaked match as City closed the gap to league leaders after Arsenal’s narrow defeat.

    Guardiola Demands Simplicity Despite Brilliance

Cherki set up Ruben Dias for the opener before creating a remarkable second goal with his rabona to Phil Foden. Cherki said he relied on his technique to serve teammates like Foden, Haaland, and Marmoush. Guardiola argued that effective play should stay simple, citing Lionel Messi’s mastery of basic actions. He warned Cherki that unnecessary complexity could create problems for him in the future. Houghton still admired the skill, and fans applauded Cherki as he left the pitch in the 82nd minute.

    Rising Influence in Guardiola’s Attack

Cherki accepted the man-of-the-match award with a smile, pleased after a strong performance. He scored in the season opener before missing two months with a thigh injury. He has now delivered six assists in 13 games across competitions, showing clear progress. Guardiola sought new creativity after Kevin De Bruyne’s departure, and Cherki may provide that spark. Cherki created six chances, touched the ball 104 times, and contested 14 duels, leading all players. Danny Murphy praised his vision and ability to unlock defenses and said Cherki’s developing link with Erling Haaland could define City’s attack.
