Wayne Rooney says Michael Carrick is the right choice right now to steady Manchester United. Rooney believes the timing makes sense during a difficult period for the club.

Manchester United confirmed Carrick will lead the team until the season ends. The club announced the decision on Tuesday after the departure of Ruben Amorim.

Rooney and Carrick shared a long history at Old Trafford. They played together 366 times and won five Premier League titles.

Rooney says the decision feels obvious because elite managers remain unavailable right now. He explains that the club needed stability more than ambition at this stage.

Rooney says Manchester United sit in a poor position and need calm leadership. He believes Carrick must restore order and confidence quickly.

Summer questions remain over permanent manager

Carrick’s temporary role leaves open questions about the summer appointment. The board still must decide on a long-term direction.

Former Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso and England manager Thomas Tuchel attract early speculation. Both names already circulate within football circles.

Rooney praises Alonso’s work in Germany and sees him as a patient option. He suggests Alonso could wait while monitoring Liverpool’s situation.

Rooney personally prefers Tuchel for the job. He highlights Tuchel’s league experience, trophy record, and current England success. He says time will reveal the final outcome.

Carrick’s calm image hides sharp focus

Carrick played 464 matches for United across 12 years. He also managed a short caretaker spell in 2021 with strong results.

The 44-year-old later coached Middlesbrough from 2022 until 2025. That period strengthened his managerial credentials.

Rooney describes Carrick as fun and personable away from the pitch. He warns that Carrick brings intense focus behind his calm appearance.

Rooney says Carrick enters the role fully prepared and serious. He expects no lack of authority or commitment.

Derby test arrives immediately at Old Trafford

Manchester United sit seventh after one win in six league matches. The team struggles for consistency and control.

Carrick’s first match comes against Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime. City travel a short distance for a high-pressure derby.

Rooney calls the match massive for the club and Carrick. He expects Carrick to add calmness and grit to performances.

Rooney admits City present a huge challenge even at Old Trafford. He still believes United can win if they perform together.

Carrick and Holland expected to bring organisation

Carrick appointed Steve Holland as his assistant. Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion also joined the staff.

Holland previously worked with England during major tournament runs. Those teams reached a World Cup semi-final and two European Championship finals.

Rooney praises Holland’s tactical detail and training structure. He says Holland ran sessions while the head coach oversaw management.

Rooney expects Carrick and Holland to improve organisation quickly. He believes United will become harder to beat starting Saturday.
