Dominant Start to the Season
The 63rd Bundesliga season kicked off with a one-sided clash as FC Bayern Munich thrashed RB Leipzig 6:0 in Hollywood, Florida. Harry Kane was the star, scoring a hat-trick to seal a comprehensive victory.
Pre-Match Context
Before the opening game, Bayern were clear favorites. Historically, in 23 Bundesliga season openers since 2002/03 featuring the reigning champion against a challenger, the champion has won 18 times, drawn five, and never lost. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany fielded the same lineup as in their 2:1 Supercup win over VfB Stuttgart, while Leipzig made two changes from their DFB-Pokal victory over Sandhausen, including Gulacsi in goal and Bakayoko on the wing.
Early Goal by Olise
Bayern dominated possession early but created few chances. The breakthrough came in the 27th minute after a slick combination through Stanisic, Gnabry, and Goretzka, leaving Olise to finish from close range. Just five minutes later, Luis Diaz added a second with a powerful shot after a clever assist from Gnabry. Kane threatened with a volley in the 25th minute and Olise scored again in the 42nd minute, giving Bayern a 3:0 lead at halftime.
Second Half: Kane Shines
Leipzig made double substitutions at the start of the second half, and briefly had more possession. However, Bayern struck again in the 64th minute, as Kane converted Luis Diaz’s assist into a stunning goal, making it 4:0. A controversial Leipzig goal shortly after was disallowed due to a faulty free-kick execution by Lukeba.
Kane completed his hat-trick with goals in the 64th, 74th, and 78th minutes, exploiting both his finishing skill and Leipzig’s defensive lapses. The match ended 6:0, a well-deserved triumph for Bayern.
Looking Ahead
Bayern will continue their campaign in the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday against Wehen Wiesbaden, before traveling to face FC Augsburg in the league on Saturday. Leipzig will host 1. FC Heidenheim in their first home game of the season.
