Teenage Prospect Makes Big Move to Spain
FC Barcelona have completed the signing of highly rated 16-year-old Ajay Tavares from Norwich City’s academy. The young midfielder had drawn attention from several European sides, and while the financial details have not been disclosed, Norwich will receive compensation for his development.
Tavares joined the Canaries at under-12 level and steadily progressed through the ranks. Last summer, at just 15, he came off the bench in a pre-season friendly against Dutch side FC Volendam, though he did not feature in a competitive senior match.
Pride and Promise at Carrow Road
Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper admitted the club is disappointed to lose such a promising player but expressed pride in his development. He praised the academy staff for their role in helping Tavares reach a move to one of the most prestigious clubs in world football.
Tavares’ most recent outing came for Norwich’s under-18s against Chelsea FC in January. On the international stage, he has already represented England national under-17 football team at various youth levels, underlining his growing reputation.
Following a Familiar Path
Tavares is not the first teenager to swap English football for Barcelona’s famed academy. In 2019, Louie Barry made the same move from West Bromwich Albion before returning to England a year later to join Aston Villa.
A year earlier, Marcus McGuane left Arsenal FC for Barcelona’s B team, later heading back to England with Nottingham Forest and going on to feature for Oxford United, Bristol City and Huddersfield Town.
Tavares will now hope to carve out a longer-lasting chapter in Catalonia as he takes the next step in his young career.
