Atalanta reached the Champions League last 16 after a 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund sealed a 4-3 aggregate comeback.
Lazar Samardzic converted a 98th-minute penalty to decide the tie. The referee awarded the spot kick after Ramy Bensebaini caught Nikola Krstovic in the head while attempting a clearance. The Dortmund defender received a red card.
Atalanta had started strongly as they tried to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit. Gianluca Scamacca scored from close range in the fifth minute. Gregor Kobel then made two important saves to keep Dortmund in the game.
The hosts doubled their lead just before half-time. Davide Zappacosta’s effort deflected in off Bensebaini. Marco Carnesecchi preserved the advantage early in the second half with a fine save from Serhou Guirassy. Maximilian Beier then struck the post for Dortmund.
Mario Pasalic headed in the third goal to put Atalanta in full control. Substitute Karim Adeyemi revived Dortmund’s hopes with a superb finish in the 75th minute.
The tie seemed set for extra time until the late penalty. Samardzic beat Kobel with the final kick to send the Italian side through.
Sead Kolasinac described the closing moments as a whirlwind of emotions. Dortmund captain Emre Can admitted his team made too many mistakes and did not deserve to progress.
Atalanta will face either Arsenal or Bayern Munich in the next round, with the draw scheduled for Friday.
