Raheem Sterling has joined Feyenoord on a deal until the end of the season after leaving Chelsea as a free agent. The 31-year-old, capped 82 times by England, terminated his Chelsea contract in January despite having 18 months remaining.
Sterling has not played competitively since the final day of last season during a loan spell at Arsenal. He struggled for opportunities earlier this campaign after being frozen out of the first-team squad by former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca.
Sterling said he wanted to carefully choose his next step and felt convinced by discussions with Feyenoord head coach Robin van Persie. He described the move abroad as a new challenge and said he was eager to contribute.
Van Persie called the signing a major achievement and said Sterling’s experience and quality could change games.
