Liverpool FC Women goalkeeper Rafaela Borggräfe has been given a six-game ban by the Football Association after being found to have made a racist remark involving reference to skin colour. Borggräfe has already served five matches of the suspension, accepted the sanction and has been ordered to complete an education programme.
The comment was overheard by staff and teammates during pre-season preparations for a squad photograph. Liverpool investigated the matter internally before referring it to the FA. Further details of the case will not be made public on player-welfare grounds.
Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor confirmed the investigation has now concluded, describing the process as lengthy but saying the club can move on. Borggräfe will be unavailable this weekend but is eligible for selection thereafter. Liverpool face London Bees in the Women’s FA Cup on Sunday.
