Victor Osimhen: Nigeria’s Star Striker Chasing History at AFCON

    A Striker Who Inspires Hope
Where Victor Osimhen leads, Nigeria follows. The 27-year-old Galatasaray forward has been in electric form at the Africa Cup of Nations, helping the Super Eagles reach the semi-finals against hosts Morocco with a perfect record of five wins from five matches.

Osimhen has already scored four goals, putting him joint second on the tournament’s top scorers list alongside Mohamed Salah and just one behind Morocco’s Brahim Diaz. But the path hasn’t been entirely smooth. During the 4-0 round-of-16 victory over Mozambique, Osimhen had a heated on-field confrontation with teammate Ademola Lookman over a missed pass. While reports suggested tensions could have boiled over, both players and coach Eric Chelle insist the matter was quickly resolved, and Osimhen remains focused on leading Nigeria to glory.

Despite any controversies, those closest to him insist Osimhen’s determination to win is what makes him special. With just two goals needed to equal Rashidi Yekini’s record of 37 international goals, Osimhen is on the verge of cementing his legacy in Nigerian football. “It doesn’t matter if I equal the record or surpass it,” he said. “I’m just trying to win something important for my country.”

    From Struggle to Stardom
Born in Lagos, Osimhen’s journey to football stardom was far from easy. Orphaned at a young age, he sold water in traffic to support himself and his siblings. Former Nigeria defender William Troost-Ekong, who once captained Osimhen, credits this challenging upbringing for the striker’s relentless drive.

“He had to fend for himself and his siblings,” Troost-Ekong told BBC World Service. “That hunger and hustle translates onto the pitch. He’s always the first in the box, always pushing. Even in the hotel, he’s first at the buffet. That spirit makes him a natural leader for the team and a role model for younger players.”

With 35 goals in 50 international appearances, Osimhen is closing in on Yekini’s record of 37 in 58 games. But those who know him best say his primary goal is not personal glory—it’s winning the Africa Cup of Nations. “All of us want to be remembered,” Troost-Ekong said. “But for Victor, the first priority is lifting a trophy for Nigeria.”

A Club Career Built on Goals and Glory
Osimhen’s scoring touch extends to his club career, where he has consistently found the net across Europe. He first made waves at Lille in 2019-20, scoring 18 goals before moving to Napoli, where he became one of the world’s most feared strikers. In the 2022-23 season, Osimhen’s 26 goals helped Napoli secure their first Serie A title in 33 years, also making him the highest-scoring African in the league’s history, surpassing George Weah.

In 2023, Osimhen joined Turkish champions Galatasaray on loan, immediately making an impact by scoring 26 goals in 30 games, helping the club win a league and cup double. Now a permanent fixture at Galatasaray, he has six goals in 12 games this season and continues to terrorize defenses wherever he plays.

For Nigeria, Osimhen represents more than just goals—he embodies hope, resilience, and leadership. As the Super Eagles aim for their fourth AFCON title, all eyes will be on the striker who has already carved his name into history and is poised to take it even further.
