Amorim Holds Firm: No Players to Leave United Without Replacements

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has made it clear that no players will be allowed to leave the club during the January transfer window unless suitable replacements are brought in.

Despite interest from younger squad members like Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee, who are seeking more regular playing time, Amorim is reluctant to reduce his options as the team navigates a challenging second half of the season. Mainoo is still keen on a loan move, while Zirkzee has been linked with a potential return to Italy.

Even with key players returning from injury or international duty—Bruno Fernandes, Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui—Amorim believes the squad would still be stretched too thin to allow departures.

    Squad Depth Takes Priority

Amorim emphasized the importance of maintaining depth across all positions. “It’s going to be hard for someone to leave the club if we don’t get a substitution,” he said. “We are short. Even with the full squad we are short for something that can happen. We are a club with a big responsibility… we need to win every game. There are no excuses.”

The United coach will be without seven senior players for the Boxing Day clash against Newcastle, including Mainoo, sidelined with a calf issue, as well as defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire.

While the club is open to signing new players in January, Amorim confirmed that Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo is no longer an option, with the striker set to join Manchester City instead. Any potential addition would need to fit the club’s long-term vision rather than being a short-term fix.

    Investing in the Future

Amorim is focused on developing younger talent as part of United’s future plans. With Mainoo sidelined, 18-year-old Jack Fletcher is expected to provide midfield cover alongside Casemiro, Mason Mount, and Manuel Ugarte over the festive period.

“We are struggling in this moment, but the club has a plan and we are going to stick with the plan,” Amorim said. “If we have the opportunity to bring a player that we think is going to be the future of the club, he is going to come. If not, we have Jack, we have Shea Lacey… and in three weeks we’ll have Amad, Noussair, and Bryan, plus the return of Bruno and Kobbie Mainoo.”

    Mainoo’s Future at United

Despite limited playing time, Amorim is confident that Kobbie Mainoo will become a key figure at the club. “Kobbie Mainoo has played in different positions. He can do Casemiro’s position. He can play if we play with three, he can play like we played in the last game at Aston Villa. The position of Mason Mount in that game, he can play there. He is going to be the future of Manchester United. He just needs to wait for his chance. In football, everything can change in two days.”

Meanwhile, Amorim offered no updates on the contract situations of Casemiro and Maguire, both of whom will be free to negotiate with other clubs from 1 January. He believes Casemiro’s dedication in training demonstrates he will continue giving his all until the end of his United career—unless financial adjustments are made.
