Resignation Follows World Cup Setback
Steve McClaren has resigned as head coach of Jamaica’s national football team after a goalless draw with Curaçao dashed the team’s hopes of automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup. The 64-year-old confirmed his decision following the match in Kingston, acknowledging that the team had not met its objectives.
End of an 18-Month Tenure
McClaren took over the Reggae Boyz in July 2024 and led the team through 24 matches, achieving 13 victories. Despite his efforts, he stated that a “fresh voice and new energy” were needed to propel the squad forward, prompting his departure.
Future Opportunities for Jamaica
While Jamaica missed out on direct qualification, the team still has a chance to reach the World Cup through an inter-confederation playoff scheduled for March 2026. The Jamaica Football Federation has announced that the search for a new head coach is already underway.
