Aston Villa came from behind to beat Tottenham 2–1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with Morgan Rogers and Emiliano Buendía scoring two superb goals that exposed the hosts’ ongoing struggles at home.
Rodrigo Bentancur had given Spurs an early lead, finishing a well-worked move in the fifth minute, but Villa hit back through Rogers before half-time and Buendía’s classy late strike sealed a deserved victory for Unai Emery’s side.
The result brought renewed frustration for Tottenham, who were booed off the pitch after yet another disappointing home defeat. Despite a £200m summer spend and the positivity surrounding new manager Thomas Frank, Spurs have managed just one win in their last four home league matches and three in their past 18 overall.
“It’s not that simple,” Frank said. “We performed well in parts, but two moments of real quality decided the game. The fans were good, they wanted a big win, but it wasn’t to be.”
Villa, meanwhile, are surging in form, with this their sixth straight win in all competitions. Rogers’ curling equaliser — his first Premier League goal of the season — and Buendía’s composed finish reflected a team brimming with confidence after a difficult, PSR-affected summer.
“Morgan is working very hard and showing his skill,” Emery said. “He and Ollie Watkins both gave us a lot today. Buendía is also in fantastic form.”
Tottenham controlled much of the first half but failed to capitalise after Bentancur’s opener, and once Rogers levelled with a long-range effort that slipped past Guglielmo Vicario, their composure faded. Buendía’s 77th-minute winner, created by a clever counterattack from Matty Cash and Lucas Digne, confirmed another deflating defeat for the hosts.
For Villa, the victory reinforced their resurgence under Emery. For Tottenham, it was another reminder that despite investment and ambition, their home frailties remain unresolved.
