Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first footballer in history to reach billionaire status, according to financial and media firm Bloomberg.

Bloomberg lists Ronaldo among the world’s richest for the first time

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which tracks the world’s wealthiest people, has included the 40-year-old Portuguese and Al-Nassr striker for the first time. The valuation considers his career earnings, investments, and endorsements. Bloomberg estimates Ronaldo’s net worth at $1.4 billion (£1.04 billion).

Years of record-breaking salaries and deals

Between 2002 and 2023, Ronaldo earned over $550 million (£410 million) in salary. His income also includes huge sponsorship deals, among them a decade-long partnership with Nike worth almost $18 million (£13.4 million) annually.

    Historic contract in Saudi Arabia

When Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League in 2022, he became the highest-paid player in football history with a yearly salary of £177 million. His contract was originally due to expire in June 2025. He has now signed a new two-year extension reportedly worth more than $400 million (£298 million), keeping him at the club beyond his 42nd birthday.

    Messi’s earnings fall behind Ronaldo’s

Argentina and Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi, who faced Ronaldo for many years in Spain, has earned more than $600 million (£447 million) in pre-tax salary during his career, according to Bloomberg. That includes a guaranteed $20 million (£15 million) yearly salary since 2023, which equals about 10% of Ronaldo’s income during the same period. When he retires, the 38-year-old Messi is expected to receive a stake in Inter Miami.
