Newcastle United eased the pressure on Eddie Howe with a commanding 4-0 Champions League win over Union Saint-Gilloise in Brussels.
With Alexander Isak’s departure still looming large and form faltering, Newcastle needed a response. They delivered through goals from Nick Woltemade, Anthony Gordon (twice, both from the spot) and Harvey Barnes, backed by standout performances from Sandro Tonali and Anthony Elanga.
Tonali’s early volley deflected off Woltemade for the opener, before Gordon calmly converted a penalty won by Elanga to double the lead before half-time. Union SG threatened through Adem Zorgane and Anan Khalaili, but Newcastle’s defence and goalkeeper Nick Pope held firm.
Gordon struck again from the spot after VAR confirmed a handball by Kamiel van de Perre, before Barnes capped off a sharp counterattack late on.
The victory restores Newcastle’s confidence ahead of their Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest, while leaving Sébastian Pocognoli’s spirited Union side with plenty to reflect on.
