Trump Threatens World Cup Venue Moves

President Donald Trump says he will relocate 2026 World Cup matches from any city he deems unsafe.

He claimed, “It will be safe for the World Cup. If I think it isn’t safe, we’ll move it.”

US Host Cities and Logistical Concerns

Eleven US cities will host matches in the 48-team tournament co-organized by Canada and Mexico.

The United States will stage 78 of 104 games, including the final.

FIFA manages the tournament and chooses host cities. Any changes would create major logistical challenges.

Trump chairs the World Cup taskforce and maintains a close relationship with FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

He specifically mentioned Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles—Democratic-run cities hosting multiple matches.

“If any city seems even slightly dangerous, we won’t allow it. We’ll relocate matches as needed,” he said.

Trump’s Security Agenda and Previous World Cup Comments

Trump has prioritized crime reduction, sending National Guard troops to Washington DC, Memphis, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

The World Cup group stage draw will take place on 5 December in Washington DC. The tournament runs 11 June–19 July 2026.

In May, Trump suggested Russia’s participation could incentivize an end to the war in Ukraine, despite FIFA bans.

In March, he said US political tensions with Canada and Mexico would benefit the tournament, following tariffs on imports from both countries.
