Liverpool have surpassed Arne Slot’s expectations by winning their first four Premier League matches, but the manager insists the team must improve as they begin their Champions League campaign against Atlético Madrid on Wednesday. The Reds are the first Premier League side to score four consecutive late winners after the 80th minute, a run that follows the tragic death of Diogo Jota and over £400m spent on summer signings to fit Slot’s vision.
“I think we are far above my expectations from during this summer,” Slot said. “For us to be on 12 points now is so much more than I expected, especially with so many changes in the squad. I think we can do better.”
Alexander Isak has been included in the squad for the first time after missing pre-season and the Burnley win. Slot confirmed the striker will not play 90 minutes but is being integrated ahead of European duty. Virgil van Dijk praised Isak’s finishing ability and said the Swede is quickly adapting to Liverpool’s style of play.
Liverpool aim to improve on last season’s Champions League exit in the last 16 and face a challenging group stage that includes Atlético, Galatasaray, Eintracht Frankfurt, Real Madrid, PSV, and Inter before Christmas.
