Celtic Faces Backlash Over Transfer Statement

Celtic released a lengthy statement defending their transfer window, calling it a sustainable approach rather than “throwing money.” The message aimed to address supporter unrest but drew derision from fans and pundits. Former Scotland midfielder Michael Stewart called the statement “a PR disaster” and said the club should have simply apologized.

    Fans Question Player Replacements

Celtic signed 12 players since last season, but key arrivals like Sebastian Tounekti, Michel-Ange Balikwisha, and Kelechi Iheanacho only joined after Champions League elimination by Kairat Almaty. Supporters argue the club failed to replace stars such as Kyogo Furuhashi, Adam Idah, and Nicolas Kuhn despite significant transfer profits.

    Financial Justifications Fall Flat

Celtic emphasized that their healthy cash reserves do not affect UEFA compliance, citing it as a reason for delayed signings. Former Scotland forward James McFadden criticized the timing of transfers, saying fans deserve early reinforcements before key Champions League qualifiers. He added that while Celtic’s financial model worked previously, recent transfer windows have fallen short.

Club Apologizes in Words, Not Tone

Celtic claimed they take fan concerns seriously and seek to learn lessons, but critics argued the statement lacked genuine accountability. Stewart remarked the message could have been one word: “sorry.” Fans and pundits remain unconvinced by the board’s explanations, focusing instead on perceived mismanagement of the transfer strategy.
