Wales secured a 1-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Kazakhstan thanks to Kieffer Moore’s first-half strike in Astana. The win keeps Wales’ hopes of automatic qualification from Group J alive, despite a challenging 7,000-mile trip and only one full training session before kick-off.
Moore’s goal came from a Harry Wilson free-kick, flicked on by Liam Cullen, with the goalkeeper parrying into the striker’s path for an easy finish. The match marked Moore’s 50th cap and the first time a Wrexham player has represented Wales since 2008.
Wales had to withstand late pressure from Kazakhstan, with Galymzhan Kenzhebek hitting the bar and Serikzhan Muzhikov forcing a tense 95th-minute free-kick. Cardiff debutant Dylan Lawlor impressed defensively, making crucial interventions, including a last-minute clearance to deny Maksim Samorodov.
Manager Craig Bellamy praised Lawlor, saying the 19-year-old “gained a player for the national team,” while captain Ben Davies acknowledged the tough conditions and emphasized the importance of securing three points ahead of Wales’ next qualifier against Belgium.
